30th November 2010 Snow Increases Levels of Employee Absence

_

With the second bout of snow in 2010 covering most of the UK, there has been a four-fold increase in the level of employee absences due to adverse weather in comparison with the levels usually seen at this time of year. Organisations based in Scotland and the North of the country have been most severely affected by this.

Aaron Ross, CEO of FirstCare, comments, “The early part of this week has brought about a four-fold increase in the numbers of absences relating to the weather conditions. It is essential that employers take prompt action by accommodating staff with alternative working arrangements to minimise costs to their business.

Employers should continue to ensure that their working plans are reviewed and revised, prioritising essential business activities for the rest of the week and putting on hold any non-essential activities until the weather improves. These plans should be clearly communicated to staff.

Our nurses here at FirstCare have also been advising on slips and falls, another consequence of the icy conditions. Employers should also take great care to ensure the safety of their employees in communal areas, such as car parks and entrances.

Please bear in mind that this is only the beginning of the forecasted snow so absence may continue rise as the week progresses.”
