Company Medical Advisor
After working in hospital jobs and subsequently as a GP, I completed further training to become an occupational physician and have worked in a wide variety of companies during my career including transport, retail, the City and manufacturing.
Occupational medicine is challenging as it requires knowledge of a wide variety of medical conditions as well as detailed knowledge about the tasks required in an individual’s job. The impact of illness on a person’s ability to work varies enormously depending on the work, the hours, travel arrangements and coping strategies.
Although I rarely see the drama associated with acute medical care, occupational medicine does allow me to give advice to companies to enable staff to continue to earn a living and help them to maintain a good quality of life.
